Williams Stuff...
Williamstuff, vol. 1 :
Williams, lead voice for Delta 9, pops out of his cocoon to offer behind
the scenes insights on Delta 9's "Small Time Band" for future curious
listeners...
Act One (21.24)
(1): Intro - 0.03 Remember, you've been warned
(2): Small Time Band - 2.56 I've always liked the words to this
song (wrote 'em while I was still in Tarp) and they conjure up images
and smells of Bailey's, the club we use to play this stuff at. I hate
my vocal performance on this particular version - what the hell was I
thinking ? The music is good but the enitre sound is way too processed
for my ears - take away all of the effects and you'd hear desperation,
confusion, and lack of direction. A few of the live versions that exist
of this song are way better .. and funnier.
(3): Blurb 1 - 0.32 I like the beginning 13 seconds of this - sounds
like a really bad Jim Morrison impersonation (by way of Burton Cummings).
The rest of it is a take-off on the commericals that you see for Zamfir
and Pure Moods collections.
(4): Share Your World - 3.03 The music was written while still
in Tarp (with different lyrics). These particular set of lyrics were written
during the recording of "Patriot" by Nuclear Apathy (which is available
through this here website, CHECK IT OUT NOW) for yet another unreciprocable
love who shall go nameless. This version features the names of six other
little Carolina hotties who are pseudo-subliminally encrypted into Duncan's
scintillating audio porridge (see how many YOU can find and mail your
answer to mark@markduncan.net,
subject: hottie count). Any apologies to those still living or who wish
that I was dead...... As for the groove and Duncan's technicolor guitar
work ? It's okay.
(5): Blurb 2 - 0.13 Goofing off in the studio with one of Duncan's
many effects. A noise similar to "I Was Made For Loving You" by Kiss,
but not really (unless you want to count a one-chord techno-synth guitar
sample as being a rip-off - I think not !).
(6): Helios In Cosmic Tundra - 2.38 Duncan likes the groove and
the riff. I hate the vocals and the lyrics. Simply put ? They don't fit
with the music. Some of the lyrics later appeared in the song "What's
Real ?" where they're given new space to wander and breathe (this better
version can be heard on "A Delta XMas," available through this website).
(7): Blurb 3 - 0.32 I don't remember partcipating in this at all.
Science-Fiction Dune soundtrack music. Despite my idiotic premature protests,
we should have kept going with this one.
(8): Gunther B4 - 2.07 Written about a guy that Duncan and I went
to college with and who is something of a legend in Cullowhee / Sylva
folklore (on which the words are based). The breaking of glass is Josh
Lander on electronic drums who was with D9 for a short period (he's also
featured on a few "A Delta 9 XMas" tracks).
(9): Blurb 4 - 0.08 Once upon a time I left Duncan a message on
his answering machine. This is what he did with it.
(10): See You At The Mall - 3.48 I still enjoy listening to this.
I think it's one of the best (if not the best) song(s) that we recorded
in the studio during D9's existence. The chorus still rings true to me.
Great words, great music, a solid performance. Dedicated to Amelia Roehm
(or someone like her).
(11): Blurb 5 - 0.27 The first part is a snippet of a local DJ
named Waleed who sat in with us during one of our rehearsals then left,
perplexed or pissed-off, never to return. The second part of this is me,
at home, dicking around with a borrowed 4-track.
(12): Formica - 4.44 A mean-spirited little ditty written during
a disastrous gig at a hell-hole country club in Cashiers, NC, wherein
the club owners pulled the plug on us and put Stevie Ray Vaughn back on
through the speakers. They later claimed that our alto sax player, the
late Donnie Morton, was drunk (not true !) as well as your faithless scribe
(also not true !). "This sucks !," Ron Orr said into the microphone, in
a rare display of defiance towards Authority. "Fuck these people," Duncan
said, unstrapping his guitar. They didn't like us. We didn't like them.
Our future was secure..
THIS WAY TO
ACT TWO......
